Common sense is the most important survival tool
Many people believe in the theory that the world is going to end in the year 2012. There is even movie filmed about that topic, so now we have Hollywood version of possible events as well.
Many of us ask ourselves do we need to take all these predictions seriously? Is it Earth really in danger of being suddenly annihilated by some unknown cause that our governments are hiding from us?
My opinion is that humanity spends to many time imagining how to end this world, instead of facing and solving present problems, so let us analyse all theories concerning 2012 with calm mind. Calm mind and common sense is certainly the most important survival tool any of us needs.
Why people have chosen 2012 for end of the world?
The ancient Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012. Many have taken this to mean that the Mayans believed that this date would bring the end of existence on this world. However, this is not so. Like modern calendars, the Mayan calender is a way of keeping track of time. The Mayan calendar was never meant to be a predictor of the future any more than the calendar in your and mine office is meant to.
Nibiru
One of the theories says that Earth will collide or be affected by passing by of a planet known as Nibiru (Tiamat) in 2012, resulting destruction of Earth and humankind.
According to this theory, the planet Nibiru orbits our Sun once every 3600 years, making it difficult to observe. Some claim its existence is supported by ancient Sumerian writings, that are more than 2500 years old. This theory had been popularized by Zecharia Sitchin, who earned a lot of money and gained very big popularity through his books, and at first he predicted that Nibiru will come in 2003. When Nibiru did not arrive in 2003, neither in 2008, its arrival was postponed for 2012. And will be postponed again, because Nibiru will never arrive. Vivid imagination of creative people is sometimes to vivid, obviously.
People who have knowledge of ancient languages, also claim that Zecharia Sitchin´s translation of ancient texts is not correct. He was carefully adjusting translation to his theories, while not being objective, so take his writings as inspiring ones for your mind, but they are in high percentage - just fictional.
Can governments really hide something so big as Nibiru from us? No way, and up till now nothing similar to "mysterious planet that is approaching the Earth" was noticed. All objects spoted in the sky since this theory became interesting, were not planets. NASA and government could not lying to us about Nibiru because they would need to conspire with tens of thousands of astronomers, both professional and amateur, around the globe to keep the secret. That is really impossible, because not every astronomer on this world is working for NASA.
Orbit of Nibiru is very strange, on the way that cannot be supported by any astromical law. That is the reason authors of Nibiru hoax, added a new part of Nibiru fairy-tale :
It is said that Nibiru (Tiamat) is actually a huge spaceship, and that the individuals within this spaceship are those known as the Anunnaki, who have seen themselves for so long as the true rulers of planet Earth, and it is time for their return.
If the Nibiru is spaceship, then its orbit would not be so geometrical, members of Anunnaki race could arrive whenever they want to. For so developed race it would be very unpractical to travel hidden in something what looks like planet, and follow such precise path. Why would anyone in this Universe do something so stupid?

How to virtually destroy the Earth and humanity, further theories
Planetary Alignment:
Some theories predict that a coming planetary alignment in 2012 will start a chain reaction that will cause strange weather and destructive events on the Earth. The first problem with this is that there is not going to be any major alignments of planets in 2012. Usually such alignments have no impact on our planet.
Alignment with the Galactic Center:
There is also some worry about an alignment that will happen with the Sun and the center of our Galaxy. Earth, Sun and Galactic Center will be temporary aligned in 2012, but this is actually happening every December without any consequence. Any other fear coming from that like that "our solar system will somehow be moved to the violent center of the Milky Way, where it would be swollen by giant black hole in the middle of it" is just nonsense. Such events are impossible, we are too far for something like that. Actually 30.000 light years too far.

Solar Magnetic Shift:
Are the magnetic poles of the Sun are going to flip in the next few years? Yes, actually, but there is nothing to fear. It is a natural process known as the solar cycle so every 11 years the magnetic poles of the Sun flip. This coincides with what is referred to as the solar maximum, the time when there is the greatest appearance of Sun spots, solar flares, and other solar activity. But solar maximum might not happen until 2013 , it can happen even later, so the both happenings will probably not occur at the same time, even if they do, they cannot cause any doomsday events.
There are theories that this can be followed by solar storm, but there is no reason at all that we believe that mentioned solar storm will happen in 2012. If and when solar storm happens, it can cause problems with communications. But this is far from any apocalyptic event.

Earth’s Polar Shift:
The Earth`s magnetic poles have reversed multiple times over geological history, so this process is natural. We cannot predict exact time when will happen although it will happen once for sure. Very possibly we are not too far from that natural event.
But when shift once really occurs, it certainly would not cause the Earth to start spinning in the opposite direction or flip the whole Earth upside down - which are both outcomes believed by some theorists.
Actually, after this happens, we will feel much better, because present instability of magnetic poles is not so pleasant.

An Asteroid Will Collide With Earth:
This is a fear popularized by several disaster movies in the last couple decades. So please, do not belive in everything you had seen on the movies.
NASA does a great job of cataloging and monitoring the large objects in our solar system and nothing like that is on horizon, we would know it years before arrival so would hopefully be able to prevent the colision.

Climate change and ice melting

This is certainly topic of our highest concern, but we will not be floating in arcs like Noah in 2012. Up till now, level of sea has not risen up, actually is lower then it was 100 years ago. But impact of climate change is certainly very big, will be even bigger in the future and does present huge challenge for humanity, because is 95% men- made.
Only self-destructive power is actually within us. There is nobody attacking us, except our own lack or responsibility and childish behaviour that is causing us troubles.
What people made, people should be able to stop in order to remove themselves from process of self-destruction. Planet certainly needs healing and care - not our sick apocalyptic visions we get while reading various books and watching movies on which their authors earn millions of $$.
So let us focus on important and press our governments to change the laws that support greedy appetites and business that brings richness to very few and destruction for majority of life here. At least we can believe in positive outcome. If we want that our children and grandchildren continue to live here....actually they will have, because humanity still do not have any another planet where we could escape.
Let us believe that new circle of Mayan calender will bring positive changes, and new, healthier level of consciousness. Future is our responsibility and certainly we do not deserve self-created Apocalypse, neither in mind, nor in reality.

As usual, a positive, non hokus pokus look at reality. personally, I wouldn't worry about 2012 much, we'll be lucky if we make it that far. Remember the year 2000 when all the computers were supposed to crash? I don't think 2012 is any different. All superstition as far as I can see.
You are a little off base about earth's magnetic field harmlessly switching polarity. Your right in that it is a natural occurence that has happened many times before but when it does, earths magnetic field will be greatly reduced in strength for a thousand or so years leaving life on earth exposed to serious amounts of ultrviolet radiation from the sun. That's why I told you the other day to get out your sun screen remember? Hell we've got so many of Mother Nature's life and planet busting toys to worry about if one doesn't get us, another most likely will.
All the scientists agree, it's simply a matter of when, not if, in respect to Mega Tzsunamie's, asteriod collisions, magnetic reversals, super volcano's, ice ages, and other natural disasters that are headed are way and your right, we deserve what we get. Humanity in general is much much more primitive than we like to believe and without all the worlds intellects and resources combined, working together to possibly prevent some of these earth busting future events, well, it was nice knowing ya...
Why don't you try to get involved with the United Nations and see what you could do. You have the qualifications and I'd bet not one of your readers would disagree with me. It takes careing, intelligent, shakers and doers like yourself to get things done on this facockta planet (that's Yiddish meaning carnival like)...
I'm serious little girl, you got what it takes to change the world. If your interested, I have a short video of a 12 year old girl that somehow got an audience at a united nations meeting in Brazil I believe. The 12 year old kid tore a new backside of these statesman who sat there listening to her with their mouths open while she politely told them to get off their asses and do something about saveing our planet from self-destruction. Very impressive. You might just make a difference Tatjana. All great human achievements begin with the thoughts of just one individual. Remember that.

There is still much that I have to learn and research about. I see here that there are several people already that have different viewpoints about the future of our world. There's much to speculate upon and much to deliberate. But I really cannot stress this more:
We must learn to live like we're dying rather than die before we ever get a chance to live.
Too many of us are obsessed with death rather than being obsessed with life. Isn't it much better to make a change rather than wait for change to "make" us? I wish that people would just wake up and do their part to make this world a place worth living.

Tragedy we have is alredy here, due to the wars, pollution and seriously damaged climate. I am not so positive about it, and do not think that impact is minor, I see it as very serious problem.
But, I also see that impact is not - immediate disaster that would wipe us all from the face of Earth, there is certainly chance to progress.
But humanity needs to change a lot, so much that I also do not see the way if I do not belive that something like that is possible.
When one things only about disaster that HAVE TO OCCUR, the same person will not be able to see possibilities to improve.

Well, UL, I did very long research about Nibiru theory and I even wanted to belive in that,several years ago, but all people who are involved in that and gave info about Nibiru and channel Annunakis etc. did or do that because of $$. I do not blame them for that, because to humanity is easier to sell "disaster" and "end of the world" then "tools for changing the way of living".
Nibiru is hoax, that is all.
It was supposed to arrive in 2003 (never did), then in 2008, 2009, will allegedly arrive in 2012? And up till now nobody had seen it?

Zacharia Sitchen is just man who very possibly belive in his fantasies, anyway he has to in order to not loose his "fame".
BTW, I never said that NASA is "God" and that NASA does not hide anything from us - they certainly do hide a lot, but not Nibiru. It is too big and we would already seen it if Nibiru is really approaching. But is not.
Everybody has right to belive in everything what he/she wants to, but people who do not want to belive in imagination of others should also say what they observe that is truth.
Nibiru will never arrive, when people who are waiting it realize that, they will not be able say that "the others did not tell them".

Hehe, Craig - I DID WORK FOR UNITED NATIONS, for 3,5 years: United Nations Protection Forces, when there was war in my country. When they left my country, they left 10.000 people working for them without job in one week.
Hmmm... 95% of UN jobs are temporary, you work for them for short period of time only.Up till the moment you finally start to understand the job you perform (what is usually in foreign countries) your assignment is over.
If someone wants to become permanent UN staff, well, this is very complicated, because they almost never employ people permanently. Only 5% of people work there permanently. Hmmmm, if someone has to achieve anything, cannot do it in 6-18 months of performance for sure.

All the dooms day makes an individual famous really famous really really fast. Ok I say the world ends in 2011, an year earlier than 2012 then I become instantly famous, least famous for some time. Media is all around me and I get my moollah to last me till doomsday. After 2011 I will fall in my repute but then there is nothing called bad-publicity :D

Geeze Louise! Somehow I should have know about your UN affiliation. What else have you done? Anyway, I was suggesting you go there as a delegate from your country where you would have a say and a vote in world affairs. I guess we'll have to get you elected aa a senator first or what ever you guys do in your government. I'm not kidding Tatjana, think about it, the world desperately needs people like you that are ages above the norm in general intellect, ability, compassion and understanding, of everything humanity should be but unfortunately isn't quite yet.
I have never had any religious affiliations or stead fast beliefs other than those that make sense scientifically. Because of this, the human race and other life forms have been my god and my congregation over the years which I believe has given me an insight into their individual characteristics. One of the requirements, is that a very special representative from every country on earth be given one vote in world affairs with no abstentions and no Vito's. These people must be very carefully chosen in that the good of humanity would be their first consideration when voting and not their particular country's well being or any other biasing factor.

It's the Mayan calendar and no, it does not predict the end of the world. The Mayans predicted Cycles of time on Earth and this "ending" indicates one Cycle will end and another begin. It in no way says that the new Cycle means world destruction. A little research on the subject can help you rise above the 'world is gonna end!' There will be great changes to the world as we know it today it will not end it will greatly change.
I notice you have not commented on all of the whistle blowers some from Nasa, Majestic 12, the paperclip project, geologists, space scientists who are now asking for the truth to be told to the world at large, and who are giving out all of the information they have so that people are pre warned. Not just about Nibiru but everything to do with our future and our past.
You cannot play with this stuff, people will believe you and you have not informed yourself with all of the available information. Especially if you think Sitchin made it all up without referencing the tablets from Sumeria (Iraq) that he spent years translating.
When we are operating from our spiritual selves, we have no need of fear of any of this information and can allow ourselves to seek all of it for we are spiritual beings having a physical experience so the truth needs to be faced.
You are the only person I have seen who has written that our planet collides with Nibiru where did you get that from?
Our fellow travellers on this path who are in the southern hemishphere our already seeing Nibiru in the sky, it has been photographed many times and is shown in the bible as the great destroyer and on many cave walls.
The issue of money is strange in this context since people are making huge amounts of money from healing/law of attraction courses and books and coaching.
I have total respect for those who make no money from putting their lives on the line to tell the truth. Many are already dead, some of our top scientists who have dared to start writing about the real truth.

I believe in the existence of the Annunaki as well as other races from other planets, as for the apocalyptic stuff, I agree with you that it's mostly money making schemes. The Mayans calendar though, from the research I have done, is more accurate than our own. So that's intriguing. As you have reiterated over and again here, I mostly hope for something positive. I believe in the power of belief!

From my spiritual resources there is 100% correct info that Nibiru will never arive and that this story is one of the biggest hoax of this century for that ones who belive in it.
Such hoaxes are invented to remove people from thinking about real problems that affect this world and finding way to solve them.
But let us not argue about that topic, it is not healthy for our energies, instead of arguing, let us see what will happen in 2012.

Thank you very much, Ben. I gave "Nibiru theories" a chance, several years ago, but realized that "something is very rotten" with it.
I was also active member in several spiritual groups, and as very courious person, started to digg deeper then average people...After digging, and non-attachment, you see that truth is very often much different then is presented.
It is not always $$ the reason for misinterpretation, very often inventors of such stories blindly belive in their own visions and ideas and due to that they are able to convince many, many people.
Mayan callender itself is accurate, but the end of their cyclus actually does not predict anything, it is just end of one very long cyclus that will be followed by beginning of the new one. And I hope that humanity will become wiser in the new one .

I know that people who expect the quick end of material reality would be very unpleasantly surprised when this will not happen. Why unpleasantly? They will ask themselves on what they wasted all their energy and years.
And you are certainly not right: me and you are not afraid of dying, but we belog to minority of people without that fear. The rest of the people is very scared of dying and such stories are causing them serious traumas, belive me.
But instead of arguing, let us see where will be Nibiru in 2012... BTW, Sitchin recently put forth the date of Nibiru arrival for year 2085, so no need to be upset, none of us will be here in 2085 at least not in these bodies!

Wow! That's an impressive list but I really doubt they were all murdered to keep them quiet. Many were from 25/30 years ago, many were most likely natural or self inflicted deaths, and many were extremely diverse in method and location such as the lockerbie bombing which was not likely aimed at one particular scientist.
A list like this although impressive which it is intended to be, MUST be individually researched by those interested before forming an opinion as to it's validity. Anything less and the reader will easily fall prey to the author's desires if intended to dishonestly control the mind set of the people.
The worlds organized religions are a classic example of this super simple form of mind control and look at the global devastation over the centuries as a result. Billions of "believers" killing each other when not one of them has one miserable ounce of proof in respect to their religious beliefs. Only what they've been told is the truth by others over the centuries especially as adolescents.
This list may or may not be 100% correct in the innuendo it's suggests. I've been around for a very long time. Don't believe anything until you can prove it yourself. If you do, and spread the word as a would-be subversive would have you do, you make yourself easily corral-able and that's exactly what people that wish to control and dominate want.

In addition to that, there is nothing spiritual, neither reasonable in belif that people have nothing to do with environment and climate on Earth: all our garbage, wars, nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, other chemicals, industry, poisons, gases while there is 6,5 billions of us overpopulating this planet...do have major affect on our bio-systems. Even in book form, marketing, selling, and having the book read by millions is a very very long shot no matter how "right on" you may be.

I've not been studying the Mayan calender or the galactic cycle of Niburu but I do believe that a collective consciousness be it positive or negative has impact on what we perceive as reality. Thanks Tat for your message to focus on the positive -"Only self-destructive power is actually within us. Linda...It is very true that global warming (and freezing) is a natural event that has happened many times in the past but if you believe, this time around, mankind has nothing to do with our global warming problem, I would respectfully suggest you pay less attention to the cosmos and more attention to the literal millions of tons of solid and gaseous matter we humans spew into our atmosphere and the undeniable effect it has on our current global warming problem.
We may indeed be at the beginning of a natural cycle but to discount our helping the process along or perhaps, causing it all together is scientifically ridiculous. Go Google Al Gore on the subject. He'll set you straight with provable statistics on the subject.

That the "vibrational level" of humanity has been and will continue to rise as people begin to "remember" their spiritual nature. On or around 2012 I like to think we'll reach the "hundredth monkey" and rouse the rest of sleeping humanity. I have heard speculation that world would end in 2012, even before the film you mention had been released.
The fact is that none of us know for sure - all these ideas that people have are just theories. There probably isn't a half-shred of truth in most of them.
For some, the world will end in 2012, as that will be the year in which they die (through both natural and forced deaths). For others their world could end 100 years beyond 2012 or it could even end next week or tomorrow.
You cannot say what will happen - you can only speculate what a predicted outcome of events based on past knowledge, theory and maybe some math and scientific equations.
Maybe instead of getting our proverbial knickers in a twist over something which we will have NO control over, we should enjoy life and celebrate the fact that we have such a wonderful and beautiful world which is OURS to explore.
Level 42 put it best in the opening verse of their 1994 hit Forever Now:

People sit and they worry about the future,
just live your life 'cause for now that's all there is.'
So stop worrying, enjoy life, be positive and have a great Christmas!
I am sure that nothing negative will happen in 2012 (at least not caused by forces we cannot influence) but maybe something positive - ET's arrive on planet Earth and teach us to think positive which would be a great start into a new age. Let's be prepared!

I know where your coming from in respect to the people in the UN being no different than anyone else. BUT...
As pointed out in my book, the re-organizing of the New UN would require one very special, carefully chosen person representing each country on earth.
I ask you this: if you had a seat on the UN General Council. and you had to vote on something that may help Croatia a little bit or help Humanity a lot, how would you vote? I already know your answer. I submit to you that a General Counsel of people with your integrity would and could solve all of our current global problems practically overnight. The bulk of the representatives on the General Counsel now, vote for each of their countries as priority #1. The right people (like yourself) on the counsel would ensure the good of humanity would come first and the UN would become a trusted, world governing body, at this point in time, we need desperately but ONLY with the right people in the right job. You could be one of those people...

But I am not in UN now, and I really do not know the way how would they employ me again. Remeber, that I live in Croatia, so this makes things far more complicated for requiring any job for any foreign organisation. This is also reality of this world.

Actually, by definition, the sun, earth and galaxy centre align twice every year. If they align on the equinox in the winter, they also align on the summer equinox.

End of Mayan calendar doesn't mean end of the world. People are just afraid & I don't blame them, instead I blame all the media. 2012 will be over soon just like 2000 and many past prediction about the dooms day...therefore please don't worry.....

Dear Foreignpress, of course that 2012 will not happen. Earthquakes are caused by climate change - big amount of ice that melts on the poles is causing major geological instability - so we will see what will happen.

I believe world was not created to end and there is no end to the world. Natural disasters happened many times in the past but the world is still here to stay.
End of the world is mostly a religious belief. However, history of the world's religions is only few thousands year old but the world is billions or even trillions year old, no one knows the facts.
Therefore don't worry, just think about today and be happy.

It is even more Tony, some researches recently proved that even the end of Mayan callender will not happen in 2012 - the end of it is apparently some 50-60 years later.
So many people will be disappointed. Anyhow, it seems that we cannot escape (with the help of some doomsday) from good old problems we face on this planet and from creating of many new ones in the meantime.

Interesting article, but so full of holes that it would take a whole Hub to enlighten you and it seems your mind is no longer open, truly a pity.
Universal Law is closer to the truth than you are, perhaps if your perspective wasn't so narrow you would realize this. It is easy to deceive those that are unwilling or unable to accept the truth.
Is it more important for you to be right or to find the truth?
Nibiru is already here and all of the astronomers have not been deceived. It has been photographed and these photographs are on the internet, however since no one knows what it looks like it is easy to dismiss as something else.
The governments of the World know this and actually encourage disinformation and the spread of it. You have been played and your narrow perspective does not allow you to see this.

Great research into the variety of topics being presented as doomsday signs primarily around 2012. Many predict total disaster, you appear to predict minimal or no impact outside of obvious man made climatic changes.
I have done extensive research also and think the truth lies somewhere in the middle of the two predictions. Mankind has effected much more than our abiltity to predict and see can be identified. The occurences will be and are caused by humanity, but with all of our sophisticated technology we are ignorant of the impact we having outside of our planet. We seem to think our actions are limited to and affecting only this planet, how absurd and self centered.
It is however not 2012 we need to concern ourselves with, it is now and today. Changes are taking place shifts are occuring and although I agree with you that 2012 is not the "end of the world" I disagree it is insignificant because by the time that day arrives we will all have realized an end to our world as we know it to be now. Not as an anhillation or as an end of times but as a total shift of how we do things and how things are done.
My commendation to you for your research, and excellent presentation of very controversial topics. Thumbs up!
