There is nothing better then good sleep to get rest, regenerate the body and soul and get healed.
A lot of health problems occur just because people today do not have healthy quality and quantity of sleep,
- due to the modern style of life,
- due to accepting too much responsibilities that cause stress
- our prejudices about sleep (we like to set up false standards about sleep, like how many hours is "normal", what is "too much" of sleep, what is "too little", when is "normal" to be awake, when is "normal" to be asleep etc).
- due to the constant noise to which are majority of people exposed in crowded cities,
- due to the alarm clocks that wake people up usually when they are in the deepest and highest quality of well deserved sleep and rest.
- due to the intake of various medications, alcohol, drugs
- due to the wrong belief that sleeping is wasting of time

Exact amount of sleep somebody needs is very individual parameter for every person. There are periods when body and neural system requires very many sleep. People usually confuse that need with depression but most often this is not so: the most valuable point of sleep is deep regeneration of brain cells, that can occur ONLY in deep sleep and if person sleeps as much is needed.

From my early childhood I discovered that many problems that I created by some actions can easily disappear and get solved after good sleep. Why is that? We create our material reality even during the sleep, while brain is processing emotions and memories and establish new brain patterns. With new, healthy brain patterns, created during the healthy sleep, and healthy emotions are result of that, we easily attract healthy situations in our life. Brain has tremendous power of self-healing and healing of our life.

Sleep Cycle
Sleep Cycle and importance of deep sleep and REM sleep
Healthy sleep is going on in cycles. After starting to feel sleepy, brain gradually slows down the activity and starts to produce slower brain waves (Alpha, Theta and finally Delta) then in awake state (when majority of brain waves are quick Bheta). At the same time, muscle activity slows down (with occasional muscle twitching) as well as heart starts to beat slower and breathing becomes slower. After stage of light sleep, /when we are easy to awake), we are gradually entering in the stage of deep sleep.

Deep Sleep - During the deep sleep brain is taking rest producing very slow waves, needed to restore the energy we expend during our waking hours. It is interesting to know that blood flow decreases to the brain in this stage, and it redirects itself towards the muscles,
- restoring physical energy,
- regenerating the cells, tissues and organs of the body.
- This stage is extremely important for immunity to improve.
- This stage is regulating hormones in the body
- this stage is stage of deep self-healing

REM sleep - Dream Sleep – during that stage, eyes move rapidly (REM = Rapid Eye Movement). It is also called paradoxical sleep because brain activity is very alike to awakened state only body is paralyzed, although muscles can occasionally twitch. Breathing and heartbeat are rapid. In this stage brain is
- processing emotions,
- retaining memories,
- relieving stress and
- healing psychological traumas.
- REM sleep is extremely important for process of learning and developing new skills.
Most of dreaming occurs during the REM sleep.
We usually need to have three to five REM episodes per night.

Deep sleep and REM sleep are extremely important stages of sleep - brain cannot work properly without any of them, neither if the sleep cycle is constantly disrupted. Without sleeping as much as body needs - all our mental and physical functions gradually deteriorate, we cannot process traumatic experiences, brain becomes full of various info that is not properly processed and we also cannot learn new things and skills.
Today people suffer from heavy sleep deprivation, majority of people do not sleep enough or their sleep is of poor quality - no wonder why humanity is so tensed, not focused, full of fears, ill and confused . So many mental and physical problems would never appear if people would sleep as much as they need. Longetivity would also improve. Without enough sleep we literally burn ourselves too fast.

Medications create new sleeping disorders

Many people try to heal their sleeping disorders by taking sleeping pills, what is certainly the worst possible option in majority of cases. Despite the fact that is so easy to ged addicted to them, they disturb normal sleeping patterns and negatively influence brain waves .
As I mentioned in previous chapter, sleeping goes in cycles that sleeping pills disrupt and most often completely surpress REM phase that is nessessary for brain. As a result, brain does not get the chance to fully process all informations, daily happenings and emotions and cannot fully regenerate. Effects of using sleeping pills are similar to that ones of sleep deprivation, maybe even worse - brain that cannot process memory causes that traumatic experiences and negative emotions never get healed ...what does not allow regeneration of brain cells as well.
Nothing strange that people who are constantly on sleeping medications usually do not heal their chonic diseases - their brains and whole bodies are constantly exposed to trauma caused by lack of normal and natural REM phase and lack of normal exchange of sleeping cycles.

Tatjana: As usual, I enjoy reading your hubs, they are always informative and accurate! I mentioned to Phil a couple of days ago, that I am sleeping very well and have for the past few months, something I couldn't do for decades. No wonder I was not at my best emotionally. I attribute my ability to sleep better to the homeopathy remedies you sent me, so once again, thank you! I was going to email you, but since you wrote this hub, I take the opportunity to let you know here. :)You should see me now... if I am watching TV and its dark, and I close my eyes for a few seconds right away I get sleepy, even in the car, if I relax I get sleepy and its not a lack of energy, its a change my body has taken.
BTW, good to know that if I sleep more my body will heal its issues.

Wonderful information Tatjana and I love those kitties too! The sleep stages are so important and getting the hours of sleep you need is too. Unfortunately the mind and body don't always cooperate so I'm glad you have recommended some excellent natural remedies
You did a really great job on this hub. Sleeping has always been a struggle for me and I have been trying to really work on this. I usually find myself climbing into bed around 3 or 4 A.M. and am up by 10 or 11. Not good, I know.
I can vouch for Melatonin and Valerian Root, as I have had success with both of these supplements. I have also used a lavender eye pillow. There is nothing quite like herbal remedies.
I have been trying to focus on changing my sleeping habits for sometime now and have been somewhat successful for short periods of time.
I wish that I could be like the cat's in your pics. Funny thing, my cats are like me. They come to life in the wee hours of the night and have a ball.

Since I've become a mother I appreciate sleep even more, because it is a valuable thing in my life. I always try to have several hours of uninterrupted sleep during night (I know this might seem funny, but when you have a child, whole night sleep becomes luxury) to be healthy.
Hi Tatjana - This is a great hub, I had forgotten that passionflower could be used to get a good night's sleep. In the past I used to drink either passionflower or chamomile tea in the winter time it just seems to make one sleep better. Thanks for sharing. :)
Hey Tatjana, thanks for the great information. I think you are right about the dark--they have proven that light can be used to cure jet lag. If I want to cure an inconvenient sleep pattern, even if I get to sleep late, I just force myself to wake up (and get up)for a few days in a row at the same time with lots of light and that helps me feel sleepy at the right time for the new, more convenient sleep pattern.

Excellent information and well-written hub and the message is so simple - sleep can work wonders - yet we all chase the right food, the right exercise, while ignoring the simple.
Good hub, but maybe too simple a message. what I really want to know is what if you can't get enough sleep- is there anything to counteract the effects? I always knew I needed at least 9 hours of sleep, but I began suffering from sleep deprivation when I had a baby (you forgot to mention "due to having a baby"). For almost a year I got 2-4 hours of sleep, mostly interrupted too and it's not like I had choice, I was getting up to feed a baby. Many of us know we don't get enough sleep so now what?

This is a very good hub. I was in the military at one time and I have met other veterans who also have a problem sleeping. I also work shift work right now, so that doesn't help either. Very nice and informative.
"let me sleep on it." Seriously, your attention to the depth and breadth of "sleep" is outstanding. Have you an idea why we need to sleep? I have read many theories... I do know and understand hypnosis is not like the command, SLEEP ! and the patient/subject immediately appears to be asleep... Hypnosis, that is another subject I cannot wrap my brain around. I do, I use hypnosis, but REALLY what is happening in terms of the brain action/function in its apparent altered state interest me...

i just kinda hard to go through REM sleep..
I find reading before bed is a great way to wind down before sleep. It slows and calms the mind after the day's hectic routines and yet keeps it active, in a relaxed way. zzzzz
I just found that one of my sons have sleep apnea, so his rem sleep was at 190 mins instead of 50 mins. After finding this out he was put on an oxygen machine which really helped he tremendously. He feels so much better full of energy. Sleep does effect your health ,so thanks for the hub.

I try to survive on 6 hours of sleep a night. I find keeping a schedule helps me best.

Great hub. Some might call Sleep the cousin of death, but actually it refreshes your active life. While you could ask are we maybe just living to be dreaming at night because we can be everything we want to be in our dreams? Philosophy is one strange mess, let me say that.

Yo- those cats have it so rough!
I've seen some articles talks about thing to do before sleeping. The first don't is avoid reading or using computer at least 1 hour before sleeping. it will trigger our brain to release cancerous hormone due to our brain assume it is still daylight and our brain suppose to be working instead of sleeping.

The hardest part for me is trying to go to bed at the same time every night. I'm a programmer during the day and sometimes my days drag on wayyy to long, killing my sleeping schedule :(.

I suffer from insomnia a lot. My doctor prescribed Trazodone, a common sleep aid. It took me years to get off the stuff. Personally, when I get too tired it is hard to fall asleep. My remedy has been to take an afternoon nap and keep a regular evening sleep schedule.
