Do not let rich ones to become even richer, put your money in your own pocket
There are many ways how people can earn money online or think they can earn. Some of them are very reliable, some of them are very tricky and pure illusion that will never bring any financial results.
Since I started to earn money online, 18 -19 months ago, I investigated various options for earning money, that would be compatible with my personal interests and could bring me the best possible results. Today, very high percentage of my earning come from online resources. Hubpages are very important part of that story, and brought me excellent financial results. After only 18 months being active online, I am still almost beginner, remember?
I love writing: I love it so much, that I even write on foreign language (that is completely different from my native, Croatian language).
- Of course, I could not write if this writing would not bring me money.
- I love holistic healing, this is my full time job, but I can heal others only if they pay me for that.
- I love photography, but I can be artist only if this brings me money. This is reality of this world.
So I did my best (according to my experience) to earn money through monetizing my passions. Last year I earned from Hubpages only something between 8.000 - 9.000 US$ ( I do not care too much for financial bookkeeping, so I can know only approximate amount. When I realized that, several days ago, I became very proud of myself .
There are three ways that worked for me on Hubpages up till now:

- GoogleAdsense account (now I receive Goggle check every month)
- marketing and sale of my art products (I started with that very recently) Check: http://tatianamichaela.redbubble.com
The rest of my earnings come from other resources (I have my clients for healing in Croatia, plus I have in my country Premium telephone line for counselling).
The reality of this world is that we need to monetize our passions, if we want to become fully self-sufficient. Majority of people is not born rich. We cannot live from from passion itself. Hubs can be monetized, and one can earn encouraging amounts of money from writing.
While investigating ways how to earn money online, I checked affiliate marketing as very interesting and practical way of monetizing my Hubs. Of course my main niche is natural healing, so I became affiliate of 3 great companies that sale remedies and promoted their products through my Hubs. But my experience was not good at all, so here is my research:

Can You Earn Sufficient Amount of Money through Affiliate Programs
.
Affiliate programs used to be very simple and highly effective way for earning money on line in previous years. Owner of the website, or articles (Hubs) writter was able to earn plenty of cash just by recommending the products or services of other website. through affiliate link. (visitors are sent to another website and after purchase is made, affiliator receives commision)
Many people became really wealthy while working as affiliators: this type of marketing was rapidly growing, sales were exploding, several years before, with a lot of dedicated work, you really could become rich beyond the wildest dreams.
In last years, situation became gradually very unfavorable for such type of marketing. Marketers started to work harder then ever, while earning less then ever, and belive or not, recession is not to be blamed for that. It happende something completely else:
- low earning of Internet marketers actually caused Internet recession.

HOW AFFILIATE PROGRAMS SHOULD WORK AND WHY THEY DO NOT
Main principle of affiliate program is your tracking code you get when you join any affiliate program. When costumers click on your affiliate link, your tracking code should stay memorized in his/her computer with the help of cookies.
Cookies are little files which in PC of costumer store data about
- website your readers visit and,
- your very precious affiliate code
Cookies are able to store that data for any period between 1 day or 1 year, even permanently depending on time they are programmed... Companies for which you market, usually let you know for how long they programmed their cookies, what is important because if visitor decides to buy the product later on, without visiting your Hub or website again, cookies should stay in his PC together with your affiliate/referral code, so this should assure that you get your commission.
First rip off of affiliators happened when many companies who organized affiliated bussiness decided to set up duration of cookies on short periods of time (Amazon.com is one of them) instead of living them permanently. Many people decide to buy products much later after getting info about them. When cookies do not have permanent duration, affiliators loose their commision. Instead of being GRATEFUL for FREE MARKETING their affiliators do for them, companies slapped them in the face and took out money from their pockets on that cunning way.

In last years, situation became even worse for affiliators, because due to the new protection features Internet users use today cookies started to behave as little naughty wicked creatures because they started to disappear when AFFILIATOR NEEDS THEM THE MOST. New systems of PC protection are eating and crunching cookies, sucessfully as they are chocolate ones.
Such big boom of protection features that hardly protect privacy of users is basicaly created because of porn sites on that way their users stay completely anonymus plus no cookies and spywares can stay on their PC. So pornography almost completely killed Internet affiliate marketing.

WHERE AND WHEN COOKIES DISAPPEAR
1. Today 95% of Internet users set up security levels on their computers very high, so cookies just do not catch on their PC, so your tracking code that should bring you commision - disappeares in the fogg.
2. New Internet browsers have ability to block the cookies by default, while in old ones user could decide wether to block them, or not.
3. Many people today regularly clean their computers from spywares, adwares and cookies, even if they do not set up security level as high and do not block cookies on their old browsers, so with them they delete affiliate codes of heavy working marketers and their potential earning is gone with the wind.

Altough in above mentioned ways your tracking code disappeares, as well as your hard earned money, something very interesting and cunning is happening at the same time:
- your affiliate reports will still show that people CLICKED on your link and that is because clicks are registered through your affiliate link, and have nothing to do with cookies.
Well, after you see in your reports numbers of clicks, you will be left in illusion, that with so many visitors is just "matter of time" when sales will start to explode, and you will start even harder with promoting the products and developing your marketing strategies.Doing that, sales will really explode, but not for you - you will be getting commision just from 5 percent of them ...from that costumers who are not bothered too much about PC protection and have old browsers.
Of course, while working so hard, you will earn some money, that will INSPIRE and MOTIVATE you to work even harder, and majority of your work is done FOR SOMEBODY ELSE, of course.
Of course, it is completely up to you, will you allow the others to misuse your energy or not.
What works then?
Can you still promote the products of others?
Yes, but use dropship program instead of affiliate one. Dropship system is a little bit more complicated, requires from you much more work, but you will be at least able to earn money for sure, and there is no financial investment from your side.
Dropship contract means the following:
- you do the marketing of products, for which you set up prices. Dropship contract allows you to get lower, "wholesale" prices for products you recommend, so yours is to set up your own, higher prices.
- Buyers order products from you and pay YOU, through the PayPal, AlertPay, or any other payment gateway you choose to set up on your website, or have link for in your Hubs.
- After receiving money, you order the products from merchandiser to be sent on the address of buyer and you pay for them wholesale price, so you keep the difference between wholesale price and your price. That difference is your earning.
- Merchandiser sends products to the buyer.
This way allows you bigger freedom in setting up the prices, but although it gives you certainly more job to do, it brings real financial results.

Create your own products or sale your own services

This was for me the most reliable way up till now.
You can sale your own products on Amazon.com, EBay, through direct e-mail communication, with the help of other sites that help you with sale, especially if you have products that can be "print on demand" (books, art, clothes, accessories). Check http://tatianamichaela.redbubble.com
Use free Internet marketing - as free ads for promoting your products. Use your Hubs for promoting your own talents, services and products, just
Monetize and promote your own services. If you are expert for anything, you can always use Premium telephone lines, sites with Premium chat services, or e-mail correspondence for earning money. Mention them in your Hubs.
There is not immediate results: this is hard work, but more relaxing then being without money, or working hard for somebody else, without sufficient results.
There is also option, that you work on the both front lines: do marketing for yourself and for somebody else. (F.e. good way is to use E-Bay capsules on your Hubs. This is not affiliate program, it is pay per click program, so much more reliable). Anyway, Google will also bring you money if your pocket.
Learn from other Hubbers what worked for them.
Let your money be yours, do not let that the others become richer while misusing and underpaying your talents and abilities. Put in your own pocket what belongs there, show self-respect and you will make this world better for yourself and all of us.

I used to sell the Native Remedies when I had my women's health website, but purchased the products wholesale.
I have resumed spiritual counseling, and have old clients I can contact, yet, I am not very good at marketing myself, will start working on this. Its true, we cannot live on passion alone, we need the energy of money and its okay, much good can be done with this exchange.

I think I've earned a buck or two. Amazon money is not even available for North Carolina. Hubpage ratings (writer and material) fluctuate while you look at your hub, for no apparent reason, computer supposedly (there computer needs an overhaul). If I didn't like hubbers that visit- I'd be outta here. Thank you very much for your hub.
Disappointing hubpage in comparison to the other one featured on Hubpage Topics. The topic was misleading as other avenues of revenue was used to make your yearly salary other than hubpages. People who are looking to make money needs step by step guidelines and not just a overture of writing about your passion or being trained on security internet systems. Kudos for length of hubpage article and for the format, however.
I enjoyed reading the hub and there is learning in it of which I was not aware. That's a nice chunk of $ to bring in just from HP! Thanks for letting us know. :]

In my country nobody expects "step by step" instructions, because such things do not exist. Nobody gave me "step by step" instructions for earning money, neither I expected such, because I use my own brain.
People need inspiration to involve their brains. Average writer in HP will never earn this amount from Google, Amazon and Ebay only.
If you do not understand that yet, you waste your precious time in expecting money to fall to your lap from the Internet sky. It will never, you need to find YOUR OWN WAYS and results will come for sure.

You just started with your Hubs. You need to build up readership at first, find your own niche for writting (or several ones, decide what you will sell...and result will come little by little. Well, I am 18 months here, and 14 years in my healing niche, my success did not come overnight.

Owners of affiliate programs will not change their strategies soon, because they cannot do nothing about it. It is not possible to overcome these technical problems, I am afraid. They know that very well, and they are using all cunning ways of promising people big earnings, to motivate them to perform for them free marketing. That free marketing is sufficient for big companies to continue earning money. When affiliator finally realizes the truth, he/she already spent months, sometimes years working for almost nothing. At the same time, company is earning a lot. When affiliator quits, there is already few new naive ones who will do the same.
At the same time, you cannot quit so easily, (like me and Amazon.com) because they will do not pay up till the moment affiliator earns 100$ or 50$ for other companies. You see how they are cunning?
This will stop as soon as marketers realize that there is no point in doing that.

Affiliate programs cannot work, because new features block cookies to even get attached on majority of PCs. The rest of people delete them. So you sale for others - for nothing...OK for few $ instead of 1000s you would earn.

But this did not happen overnight, neither was easy, LOL. It required a lot of work, learning, analysing. Now I have more experience, so it will be easier.

Congratulations on earning $8,00 Wherever you made it online, it is an achievement to be proud of. And I think you are right about being able to figure things out on your own, if you are ever to make really big money online. No one showed me how to do things or what the best strategies were. From the first day, I have sat alone in my home and worked through thousands of problems by myself. That's why I always tell people to do their own experiments and follow their own ideas. That way you really knows what works and what doesn't. If you only copy other peoples ideas and strategies, you never learn how to learn. And that is I think the most important skill to have when you run your own business on- or off-line.

But on the very beginning, I was not earning through HP as well, nothing for several months. Then slowly things started to work on more favourable way, in my mind there was advice I read somewhere: first 6 months is just to set up foundation of future success. After that, things go much easier.

This is useless effort, if I don't take heed of tips from supportive hubbers like you. I just received confirmation from AdSense. I'll work this out first. One at a time. I do have a couple of questions though:
Does adsense penalise you if you do a whole load of different subjects? My knowledge runs from online computer games to travel, to forums to survival, to humour to books, to television to cooking, to mediumship to art.
If you are getting adsense money all the time from all these places how does it choose which to credit you with?
Do you have to stick with one subject to get the full benefit here?

No, Google Adsense does not penalise you if you choose to have various topics. But your Google ranking of your profile page, will be higher if you will one day have, three or 4 main topics that are somehow connected. My suggestion is that at first you need to find those ones that will give you as many readers as possible. So you need to experiment.
Number of readers help you to earn money, with higher number of readers is higher probability to get more "clicks" on Google Ads.
In the meantime, you will get new ideas to monetize your writing on some other ways as well: I would never earn so much so quickly depending on Google only. But first 6 months results were almost nothing. Do not forget that.

I do not sell digital products, but the fact is:
1.many people do not want to use pirate bay for buying products
2. companies cannot use pirate bay. They have to use legal ways for buying softwares.
So there is enough of people to whom you can sell. But not as affiliator, because of above mentioned reasons.

So, are you drop shipping products only in your own country? Or do you drop ship internationally as well? Do you have a hub about your drop shipping activities? I would love to learn more about that. I am going to follow you..maybe I will learn more :)
Well, Americannj, I do have drop ship contracts with two companies that sale remedies, but up till now I have been to0 busy while earning through offering my own healing services and selling my own products, as I clearly said in my Hub, so up till now I just did not have too much time to sale products of somebody else (expect I have tried affiliate marketing).
My own services and products are my top priority and up till now my best source of earning. At least I can guarantee for what I am offering that it will help to heal people (my job IS specific, and it is not important just to SALE; it is more important that people really DO feel better). Drop ship contracts are waiting for now the moment I will have more time for them, so I am planning to use them much more in the near future.
And products from my art gallery are also excellent, as well as my healing services, so I am talented artist as well, not only good healer, LOL. These facts put me in specific position that I had to develop self-marketing skills: it would not be clever if I mainly focus on other people´ s products and services if I have knowledge, products and abilities ready to use.
My online clients are from the whole world, not only from my country.
Despite the fact that I was very little using drop ship contracts (because circumstances pushed me to mainly focus on self-marketing), this system does work, as I explained in this my Hub and is very simple. There is not much more to say about it, then I already wrote in this my Hub.

My tips are not the same as others:
I say:
do the marketing for yourself, not for the others. If you have your own talents, monetize them.
If you want to sell somebody elses products, do not use affiliate marketing systems (Amazon is just one of them), use drop ship contracts with companies who sell products from your niche of writing.
Google AdSense is something else: altough I regularly receive check from Google, it is not my main source of earning, far from that...
You cannot rely on Google only....
I do not now if this is your only profile you have, but with Iamcoolguy you are here only 2 months and you did not build readership. So...without readership, there is no earning.
Without investing effort, time and without expaning knowledge nothing can happen.

When you clean cookies, you clean cookies of other affiliates, not your cookies . But the others who clean their PCs get rid of yours (and if they set up high security levels, your cookies do not catch on their PCs at all).

Hi, Lovelypaper, if I do expect nothing in return, I will get - nothing. That is not love. Love needs to be MATERIALIZED.
I have to expect that my effort will bring material results (as it is bringing already ), because my love, knowledge and effort DESERVE materialization. If there is no materialization ( as money is ), I will not be able to write, because my emotions cannot pay the bills (flat, PC, electricity, food, education etc) but money certainly can do it.
So my job was to find out HOW to earn money while doing what I like most: healing, writting, art....

Hi Dao Ha, Google Adsense brings me just certain percentage of my earnings... my first 3 months on HP brought me just few cents. I started to earn regularly from Adsense last 6 months not before, but like I explained above, I do not rely on Adsense only (altough is very nice to see monthly check, I must admitt), because Google amount is still far from sufficient. So I wish you to find other ways to additionaly monetize your Hubs (like drop shippment) and little by little results will come.

This is really interesting. Just when I thought drop shipping was dead and gone, you've proved me wrong. You're definitely right on the money about the short cookie time duration. So many companies have unfair affiliate programs. It's like a free link building strategy and traffic source for the company. Thanks for making us think, and congratulations on your income last year!

I enjoyed your hub but I don't know if what you said about affiliate programs is always true. You should know that the top affiliate softwares now use other methods in addition to cookies to track clicks and sales, such as IP tracking. They are aware of the problem you are describing and they are developing technologies to lessen the dependence on cookies.
Moreover, many of leading affiliate networks, including ClickBank, make their money on a percentage basis - i.e. they earn when customers buy and they are extremely interested in helping their affiliates refer sales. Plenty of people are making bank through ClickBank and other affiliate programs.
From the perspective of someone running an affiliate program, I want to say that you are right in that web publishers should be very careful about who they affiliate with, but affiliate marketing is still a great way to earn $$$$ online. Smart affiliate program managers are more than happy to pay large commission checks to affiliates who perform - that is the best way to even better sales.
Hi, Sarah, YOU are running affilliate program actually you are selling affiliator softwares... you ARE not affiliator, so I doubt that you are reliable person for this discussion.
From your own example, much better is to run affiliate programm, then to be affiliator,and thank you for showing us all what is good to us (to own affiliate program) and what is bad for us (to be affiliator).

Hi, it seems that I did not explain myself very well. Take a major affiliate network, like Commission Junction. CJ makes its massive profits by taking a small percentage of every sale made by its publishers selling its merchant's products using its affiliate links. If what you are saying is true - that affiliate links are increasingly useless - then CJ would be going out of business. But we all know that that is not what's happening. CJ and dozens of other mega-successful affiliate networks and CPA networks are doing extremely well, even in these hard times. That's because they are utilizing alternative tracking technologies to address the cookie problem you bring up in your hub.
In other words, many powerful market forces are interested in paying affiliates lots of money, and certainly not ripping them off.
I certainly do not consider myself a "powerful market force" but I thought this perspective from the "other side" of the affiliate marketing fence would add a new angle to the interesting discussion going on here.
Sarah, Comission Junction ripped me off on my first 5 sales (all 5 of them), that my clients and Hubpage colleagues bought through my links. I know exactly who was buying products and when, because I knew all these people. Take a look above...
In addition, Hubbers on the HP, have big "affiliate problem" with Amazon.com, all of us, that is exactly like I described above...plus duration of cookies is only 24h, what is certainly scam. You are not member of HP, so partially you interfere with something you have no idea about and you try to do free marketing for something nobody asked you to do.
When I find really honest affiliate program that will track all the sales on realistic way without ripping people off, I will write about it for sure.
In the meantime, I suggest droppship programms.

But i would like to ask you one question, i join hubpages 14 months back i am not a very good writer but i tried to write few hubs on make money, sms, receipe and other but instead of getting earnings on this i got traffic from other hubs like hot hubs and all that. it is very difficult to give advice for somebody else.
I will give you my example,how I do my work here:
I write about health the most, because I know about that topic a lot and I am ready to learn new things while writting about it. But it is very time consuming work. For my best Hubs I sometimes spend several DAYS for writting them...research, mental analysis plus I invest all my experience in healing and learning about healing I have (what is more then 2 decades of constant learning).
I almost never spend less then 10 hours for writting (and editing with pics and videos) any Hub even if that Hub is about some "easy" topic (that is not connected with health), plus marketing etc.
There is no instant advice anybody can give you: you need to discover what works for you the best, I I know you will find your way.

Most people do not understand how security software and browsers are stripping out the cookies they need to get paid.
Then they over look the short duration cookies on sites like Amazon. And to make matters worse once Amazon gets an email address they will email that person to death. Everytime you visit Amazon they are tracking your every movement so they can email you again with more targeted items.
Then you add to this "shaving"... affiliate programs intentionally keeping part of your sales. Because you have no real access to the backend there is no way for you to prove this. Even when you do prove it they just shrugg it off.
Affiliate marketing as a way to make a living is extremely difficult.
Programs like eBay which used to pay you for the sale now pay you for the click... but there is no way to figure out what they are tracking per click. So like Adsense you end up working "blind".
I would definitely agree with you... if you can sell your own products and services then do it.
The only method you didn't really touch on is selling advertising directly from your sites.
If you have a popular site you can set up deals to sell the space on your sites.

Well, Scorpion, I explained in my Hub above WHY people earn so little through the affiliate marketing...so there is no logic in giving advices for something what does not work. You CAN earn some money... but a lot - is almost impossible (pls read my Hub so it will be clear to you why is impossible.)
Do you think that there are people actually making a living off hubpages ??? I could see extra income...but not a living.
I know that is possible to make full income online and HP can be very important part of that...
HP as only way of earning? Well, I doubt that besides HP team, people earn only through the writting articles on HP(Google, Amazon, E-Bay)...
altough I belive that it is possible to achieve even that goal, but with a lot of effort, good marketing, a lot of faithfull readers and after several years (3-4) of commitment. Why not?
The problem is that majority of people quit writting too soon, so they do not persist long enough to get even an extra income from HP, LOL.

There is no quick way for earning money online, even though many systems promise that, but they lie !- With a lot of effort and patience even writing online can be worthwhile.
I needed 6 months to start to earn here on HP (average time for every writer) and made many mistakes that prevented me to start to earn earlier...I also learned that I have to create my own system and do not rely on other systems (at least not too much). So I market my own services and products now and sale my own knowledge.
But honestly, earning online is tough, especially on the beginning - it takes a lot of time, learning, dedication etc. It is easier if you have some "normal" job as well, so earning online can be part time job.
I have found one system that seems OK - you earn money by placing links (even for your own websites), when people click on them - please check http://www.linkbucks.com
it might be useful to you... (I did not have time to test it completely, but it seems OK, in addition, they do not promise something what is impossible, on the contrary.)

Yes, Drop Shipping is a good option. And you're right about the cookie crushing.
It's a cryin' shame.
However, there are ways to succeed with affiliate marketing. The trick is to get the sale immediately. I'm JV-ing in a launch next week with a little system that I'm already using to do just that. Rather cool.
And also, there's a whole new breed of online earning programs out there that are, frankly, changing the way money is made online. (You gotta be careful though. Some things are to be avoided at all costs.)

Well Oflodor - if you did not get Google account, do the following: open blog on blogspot.com (Google blog),put there few of your Hubs (change a little bit the text) apply again and you will get approval for sure.
After that, just add on that Google Adsense account "hubpages.com" as a new channel.

Thanks for a fully detailed hub. This is an important issue for writers to understand about the use of affiliates to make money. I noticed in one of your comments with a reader (some 10 months before this comment) you mentioned hoe Commission Junction ripped you off. I had a horrible experience with them. They do not protect us when their advertisers renege on their agreements. I had used Commission Junction to build up a large business with Ring Central, who sells hosted phones systems (Virtual Auto Attendants). Ring Central had a written agreement to pay a percentage of the customer's billing for the lifetime of the customer's subscription. I had sold enough to make around $300 a month from these sales alone. Then Ring Central decided they didn't want to honor their agreement any more and Commission Junction couldn't care less. So I agree with you. We all need to be careful and we can't expect affiliate advertisers to stick to the original plan.

My average page views are around 2400-3200 per day but Google adsense income is zero now. However, Hubpages ad & eBay pays my internet bill around $100 per month.
